hollywood directors

For most of my life I have given much or most of the credit when
watching movies to the actors - who are really the messengers.

Rather it is the directors that are sending the messages.

I will mention a few of my favorite directors here.

I'd like to add that since I really don't think that any
directors read my blog - no one will have hurt feelings if
I leave someone out. : )
~~~
~John Landis - I always get blown away by seeing the restaurant scene with
Aretha Franklin singing R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
~Martin Scorsese - The first time I saw this on tv I was amazed that all three
main characters get blown away:  Jack Nicholson/Leonardo DiCaprio/ Matt Damon.
~Robert Zemekis - Especially Rockin' On Top Of The World from Polar Express &
the Hot Chocolate Scene with Tom Hanks.
~Ron Howard - I never get tired of being glad that Apollo 13 didn't get completely
blown away.
~Stephen Frears - I can't count the number of times that I have watched The Queen
and really thought Helen Mirren was the queen.
~*Sydney Pollack - For directing Out of Africa & acting in Tootsie.
~J & E Cohen - As with Collateral I didn't see O Brother Where Art Thou when it came out but rather
it amazed me when I did see it - and gave me a new take on George Clooney.
~Tim Burton - Sweeney Todd but it is his wife that I really like.
~James Cameron - Aliens and the times I have watched that are Legion.
~Steven Spielberg - For giving me the squashy little alien.
~Michael Mann - Heat and especially Collateral.
~Christopher Nolan - I have a computer son-in-law and a movie son-in-law
and the movie son-in-law wants to know why C. Nolan was not recognized
for Inception and so do I.
~Rob Reiner - A Few Good Men blows me away every time I see it and a chance
to see Tom Cruise as an incredibly versitile actor and from what I hear an all round
good guy who ranks in sincerity up there with Tom Hanks - well I read that somewhere.
~Oliver Stone - Wall Street sealed the deal with me not only for seeing justice done but
with Charlie Sheen.
~Ron Howard - Frank Langella was Richard Nixon in this movie not to
mention Michael Sheen who was also in The Queen  and the wonderful
Kevin Bacon and my personal favorite Sam Rockwell plus Oliver Platt.
~Roman Polanski - Anyone who only remembers his early movies is missing
out on one of the two greatest contributions to our society and I'm speaking of
Saving Private Ryan for which Tom Hanks in my mind won best actor and
The Pianist a role that Adrian Brody was born for - he did an amazing job
but I like Predators too in the end when he says 'now let's find a way to get
off of this f*ing planet' and a special award goes to the writers of Predators
for finding so many ways to use the *-word - none of which were very
creative - and the scene in which they realize they aren't in Kansas anymore.
~Roman Polanski - From the first time I saw Ghost Writer I was blown away by
everything about it except for the shot of  Ewan Mcgregor's bare butt and the
poor excuse that was for an under the sheets s*x *ce*e.
~Ron Howard - Another valuable contribution to our society for telling the
courageous story of John Nash played so greatly by Russell Crowe and
he should have gotten Best Actor because who really gives a c**p if
he threw a phone at the hotel clerk and really what does that have to
do with his acting.
~Honorable Mention:  Joel Schumacher for D.C. Cab :-)
~~~

Surely this post will encourage those with extra cash flow to contribute
heavily to the Arts - a really worthy cause.

So you prefer father over his son ( ... hmm. What about the third, though? ;)

St. Shamrock may have a word to say to you...

nicrap - please - Both of your comments are blowing my mind.

away

Would you please help me out here so I don't have to sit there tonight through the entire opera wondering what you meant.

nicrap said...

...forgive me, sue. As i said earlier i have yet to get a hang of here i.e. the language of your blog.

I guess i was referring to the holy trinity, allegorically ... message-sender/messenger/message.

St. Patrick, as you may know already, used the leaf of shamrock to explain the idea of their consubstantiality. :)

sue hanes said...

now is the time for you to forgive me nicrap - for when did I bring up the subjecto the Holy Trinity?

sue hanes said...

now I get it -

first of all - my post was about hollywood movie directors - but you for some unknown reason are talking about the Holy Trinity.

I believe in the Father, the Son and the third One - the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost.

sue hanes said...

In my post - the messages are sent by the directors of movies through the actors - the messengers.

You are the only one who is talking about religion.

sue hanes said...

However I can talk about religion.

Let's talk about it nicrap.

There are no hidden messages in my Blog.

The only reference I was making about understanding my Blog is that if someone hasn't read a previous post then they might not get another one they are reading.

If someone wants to think that there is a special message in any of my posts - then they have the right to think that.

But if I write something and I intend it to be a special message for someone I do not have to indicate that - but only hope that the intended person 'gets' it.

If the person doesn't get it then that is ok too.

but that is my problem

:)

yes, i could see that you were speaking of the directors, Sue. Why i said allegorically... but no matter.

And, i am sure you believe in the Holy Trinity. That was never in doubt. :)

nicrap said...

...no, i didn't think there was any hidden message in your post. But, again, no matter...

The thing is nicrap - I do not deal well with games.

If this is all a game then my time has been wasted. I have to take it seriously - because that is the way I am.

I do best if someone just comes out and tells me what they mean.
If I have to guess what someone means there is the danger of misinterpretation. The longer the misinterpretation goes on the harder it is to undo.

I have lived too long in the company of a game player.

nicrap said...

...hmm. I see that i have made a mistake. How to make up for it?

Here let me try again: All i was trying to say, in an allegorical way - using the idea of Consubstantiality, that is - that the same may go for the director/the actor/and the film. That, though distinct, the three may still be 'equal' ... for the audience to 'realize' IT in its entirety.

This is the best i can do. :)

sue hanes said...

nicrap - First - this is not about making mistakes. But rather me trying to figure out if comments on my blog mean anything or if someone is jacking around with me.

But I welcome all comments - and especially yours.

I googled consubstantiality and it means -as you say - that the director, actors and the movie itself - as we are discussing it -
are equally important.

But in movies I hold that the director - over the actors is the one who comes first - since he is directing the movie. If the actors are not good - then his job is made harder. But the movie is ultimatley for the audience - because isn't that what it is made for - so they are also important.

In religion - the Father comes First - but since the Son is also the Father then they are equal and sometimes confusing - like Chinatown.

But the concept is ultimately for us - so without us they don't exist - so to speak - but of course they do.

sue hanes said...

The Holy Spirit is equally important since It acts inside of us to help us indentify where the Others are coming from.

nicrap said...

...yes, it may be as you say. It was just a 'lead', Sue. Nothing more. :)

sue hanes said...

But again you play games nicrap.

For what is a 'lead,' but just more games.

I need to know what is being discussed and not just have a lead.

a lead to nowhere...

I'm interested in going somewhere.

nicrap said...

...how about teasing out a possibility? ;)

As to its being a game, i could argue all language was a game ... but let that not trouble us right now. And, it's not as worthless as you seem to imagine for, see, you googled consubstantiality and may have learnt something. Is that not something? One step at a time...

:)

But doesn't the message originate from the writer? And doesn't there have to be a Producer to realize that there is a message in a writers work that is "worth" delivering?

The movie allegory isn't working for me. It's not a Holy Trinity. It's a holy entire film crew... ;)

nicrap said...

lol... yes. An entire Olympus of divinity. Spinoza will be more to the point. ;)

nicrap said...

...time to sleep. Ciao.

P.S. the proposed trinity was merely message-sender/messenger/message. How you interpret it is up to you. :)

sue hanes said...

Legion - Never think that I do not welcome your imput into my blog life.

Because I do.

and I thank you for that.
