Everyone in the Blogosphere knows that stidh is a nutjob and as
one of my favorite blogging buddies once said - 'her comments
are incoherent' and anyway he won't even acknowledge my
comments and that is starting to get on my nerves.

dared to stand on the second from highest rung of the ladder

Speedy - Thanks for your concern but if you are a regular reader of my blog you will know that I always striving to stand on the top step -
and yet not quite prepared for what is there...

lol! Better is the enemy of "good enough". Better is always a "far off thing". Good enough can be here and stick around for a while. As Socrates once said in Plato's "Republic" for even his well known and often idealized "Republic" was not the "best" possible state... from the Jowett summary:

btw - Did you know that if you ever stood on the top step, you'd have to stand very VERY still...

If in my own mind I believe that not standing on the top step is what is best and right - then I will stand on a lower step.
But I will never 'back down' - but I will be reasonable if I believe in my heart that it is the right thing.
