That may be true in this case, but it also may not be.
Speedy - When my hus...master - was stationed in Germany in 1968 that was the first time I was exposed to interracial marriage - mostly Black troops/German white girls.
I remember that made me a little uncomfortable - not really a judgement I hope.
But looking back I think that what I was feeling is that growing up I had never been exposed to any Black perosn on a personal level until I was in college - let alone mixed marriage.
It's all about what you grew up with - when you were impressionable.
Then through the years I kept thinking about it and asking myself:
how can skin color in marriage be wrong?
isn't it about love - really...
I've come to see that Religion and Polictics can kill Relationships much more readily than skin color.
The point is that skin color was once a pretty effective proxy for a cultural difference... although those differences are today growing ever narrower.
And in the past, love had little to do with marriage. So that, too, is yet another cultural factor entering into the equation.
These Appalachians understand the concept of "outsiders"... and to them, race is likely still is pretty good indicator that so-and-so's Mammy didn't live just over yonder beyond the next hollow. If you're not white, you're probably a damn Yankee filled with all those Yankee political notions that just p*ss you the 'h off.
