a different side of Richard Nixon

I just read - on msn.com - that some Love Letters - which
Richard Nixon wrote to a former First Lady of ours - Pat Nixon -
reveal a kinder - gentler - side of him. A side of our former
President - that the article said that might surprise most
People.

Not me.

It didn't surprise me - though.

Why is that - stidh? Everyone knows that Richard Nixon
was a Mean, Ruthless Liar - who betrayed us all - and
could never have loved ANYONE - let alone the woman that
he adored.

Well - dear Friends - that's not how I see Richard Nixon.
And right now I'm gonna tell ya how I've always seen him
~~~
I don't remember when I actually formed my opinion of our
37th President. But I think it is time that we just -
LET IT BE. After all - he resigned - didn't he? And that
is a big deal - for a President of the United States.
Sure he lied.
Wouldn't anyone who was backed into a corner - someone who
was Leader Of The Free World - who had done Really good things
for This Great Country Of Ours?
RICHARD NIXON PROBABLY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING ANY WORSE THAN ANY OTHER
F*ING POLITICIAN - AND I'LL GO SO FAR AS TO SAY THAT THERE
ARE F*ING POLITICANS WHO HAVE MOST LIKELY DONE A LOT WORSE.
Richard Nixon just got caught.
So I don't know about the rest of you - but I'm gonna continue
to honor the memory of this Great Man and Former President - by
continuing to Remember The Good Things About Him - instead of
obsessing over - that one little mistake he made.
After all - He Was Our President - and that's a Really hard job.
and you can start by watching Frost/Nixon - and if ya do - I Can
Guarantee ya that it will change your mind about this Great Man -
and you will not believe - that Frank Langella is Really not
Richard Nixon.
Looks like FUN! :)
That's ok - nicrap.
I never woulda guessed you were Hinduee.
Holi sounds Really cool - nicarp.
I mean - throwing scented powder & perfume at each other - sounds much better than thowing - let's say rocks - or even hurling insults and mean stuff - like we are wont to do here.
And I absolutely ADORE colors - nicrap.
Thanks - nicrap.
sue hanes said...
That DOES look like fun - Ther.
And not only does it look like FUN - but no one seems to be getting hurt - by this type of fun.
Let me the brochure on this type of fun - Ther.
And it said something about it is
for Adventurers Without Money.
Maybe we should tell Bill Maher to check this out.
Thanks Ther.
Scented powder and perfume!!! You should tell that to them kids here. They would rather i drowned. :D
As to being a Hindoo, I sure must be carrying a sign somewhere on my rump. If only i could look! ;)
sue hanes said...
Nobody wants you to drown - nicprap. I know that - because if someone were going to hurt ya - it would have happened - before.
You are a much nicer person than that awful Bill Maher - nicrap - because he would have said 'carrying a sign on my *ss.'
nicrap - Have ya seen Frost/Nixon -if so - what did YOU think of it?
Nixon did have some good programs. It's sad he surrounded himself with assholes like Liddy and a few others. He was going to crush McGovern in 1972.
-FJ the Dangerous and Extreme MAGA Jew said...
He succeeded in crushing McGovern in '72.
As for the Watergate break in...given the leaking of the Pentagon Papers to the WaPo... I believe there was certainly aneed to investigate the source of the leaks (Plumber Operation)... but to attempt to trace it into the McGovern campaign was a bit of a stretch, even for someone as paranoid is Nixon... asitturned out to have been a disgruntled civil servant the whole time.
-FJ the Dangerous and Extreme MAGA Jew said...
...besides, neither McGovern nor Sen. Fullbright revealled any classified info on the Senate floor, to my knowledge. Ellsberg was forced to go directly to the newspapers to leak the data.
sue hanes said...
Hey Truth - It's all about who you surround yourself with - when you are President - isn't it?
I mean - one Person cannot do that job alone.
And then it's making sure that the People you surround yourself with are reliable - and Trustworthy.
It's a Big Job - isn't it Turth.
sue hanes said...
-FJ - At any rate - my whole point was that Richard Nixon paid for what he did - don't ya think?
It seems to be a big f*in deal that he resigned the Presidency.
And think of the soulsearching he must have done - there at his Really Cool Estate.
But David Frost got 'em - at least in the movie.
nicrap said...
Forgive my "ignorance" about these matters... but i have ever had only one thought about Nixon, that a deal was struck and he was pardoned. From where i stand at least, it says so much about America in general and Conservatives in particular ... but to say it would require a detailed analysis. Some other time, may be. :)
sue hanes said...
I dunno - nicrap.
The way I look at things is - everything gets its own case.
I suppose a deal was struck - but
it was thought that pursuing it further would only hurt America.
And wouldn't it have?
Did you see F/N - nicrap?
Even Jim Reston - who was so angry with Nixon that he was going to let him know it - but when Nixon shook his hand he was in awe of the 'Presidnet' - just like everyone else.
That's as it should be - because the Presidency is such an amzing job - too much - especially now - for anyone person - YET WE STILL BELIEVE THAT ONE PERSON CAN DO IT.
And We Are Surprised That Sometimes These Presidents Bend - and even break under the Heave Load they have to carry.
nicrap said...
...What you say may be true, all of it. Why i said, "from where i stand" - that is, at the receiving end of a large American discourse on "civilizational" values of which democracy and rule of law are integral parts. You preach it to every nation, and yet it turns out that you are no different from any "third-world" country with its junta.
nicrap said...
...however, it is neither here or there. What i think far more important is its implications for conservative thought. But let us wait for others to jump in. :)
sue hanes said...
nicrap - What you say may be true -but I try to run a good junta.
A junta where every Person can live the type of life that he wants - and where no one in the junta - is better than anyone else - though he may well be.
This is the Very Core Of My Junta's Existence.
Caesar ! Caesar ! Caesar !
Forgive me - nicrap - but I did go see John Carter last night - and it put me in my Joan of Arc mode.
Can ya imagine what mode I'll be in after I see The Avengers in May - nicrap? - especially if I'm just That Close To The FREEDOM That I Have Been Seeking?
sue hanes said...
You know what I think - nicrap?
I think that Others WILL jump in..
I think that they are just waiting to see if I am The Solid Ground - that they are hoping I am.
And I am - nicrap.
And to them I would say - Jump Away.
With me - no Safety Net - is neccessary - for I am the safety net.
nicrap said...
...I perhaps didn't put it very well. By "you" i meant the USA as a whole and not you personally. :)
sue hanes said...
That's ok - nicrap.
I'm just grateful for your comments here.
Say - nicrap - didja know that Truth 101 commented on my Really Cool Blog last night?
I love it when Truth comments here.
But I'm not in love with Truth - I'm in love with Bill Maher.
On the Rule of Law, Joseph d'Maistre, "St. Petersberg Dialogues"
To come now to detail, let us start with human justice. Wishing men to be governed by men at least in their external actions, God has given sovereigns the supreme prerogative of punishing crimes, in which above all they are his representatives....
This formidable prerogative of which I have just spoken results in the necessary existence of a man destined to inflict on criminals the punishments awarded by human justice; and this man is in fact found everywhere, without there being any means of explaining how; for reason cannot discern in human nature any motive which could lead men to this calling. I am sure, gentlemen, that you are too accustomed to reflection not to have pondered often on the executioner. Who is then this inexplicable being who has preferred to all the pleasant, lucrative, honest, and even honorable jobs that present themselves in hundreds to human power and dexterity that of torturing and putting to death his fellow creatures? Are this head and this heart made like ours? Do they not hold something peculiar and foreign to our nature? For my own part, I do not doubt this. He is made like us externally; he is born like us but he is an extraordinary being, and for him to exist in the human family a particular decree, a FIAT of the creative power is necessary. He is a species to himself. Look at the place he holds in public opinion and see if you can understand how he can ignore or affront this opinion! Scarcely have the authorities fixed his dwelling-place, scarcely has he taken possession of it, than the other houses seem to shrink back until they no longer overlook his. In the midst of this solitude and this kind of vacuum that forms around him, he lives alone with his woman and his offspring who make the human voice known to him, for without them he would know only groans. A dismal signal is given; a minor judicial official comes to his house to warn him that he is needed; he leaves; he arrives at some public place packed with a dense and throbbing crowd. A poisoner, a parricide, or a blasphemer is thrown to him; he seizes him, he stretches him on the ground, he ties him to a horizontal cross, he raises it up: then a dreadful silence falls, and nothing can be heard except the crack of bones breaking under the crossbar and the howls of the victim. He unfastens him; he carries him to a wheel: the shattered limbs interweave with the spokes; the head falls; the hair stands on end, and the mouth, open like a furnace, gives out spasmodically only a few blood-spattered words calling for death to come. He is finished: his heart flutters, but it is with joy; he congratulates himself, he says sincerely, No one can break men on the wheel better than I. He steps down; he stretches out his blood-stained hand, and justice throws into it from a distance a few pieces of gold which he carries through a double row of men drawing back with horror. He sits down to a meal and eats; then to bed, where he sleeps. And next day, on waking, he thinks of anything other than what he did the day before. Is this a man? Yes: God receives him in his temples and permits him to pray. He is not a criminal, yet it is impossible to say, for example, that he is virtuous, that he is an honest man, that he is estimable, and so on. No moral praise can be appropriate for him, since this assumes relationships with men, and he has none.
And yet all grandeur, all power, all subordination rests on the executioner: he is the horror and the bond of human association. Remove this incomprehensible agent from the world, and at that very moment order gives way to chaos, thrones topple, and society disappears. God, who is the author of sovereignty, is the author also of chastisement: he has built our world on these two poles; for Jehovah is the master of the two poles, and on these he makes the world turn.[1 Samuel 2:8.]
Joe Conservative said...
Nietzsche, "Geneology of Morals"
The harshness of the laws of punishment, in particular, provide a standard for measuring how much trouble people went to in order to triumph over forgetfulness and to maintain a present awareness of a few primitive demands of social living together for this slave of momentary feelings and desires. We Germans certainly do not think of ourselves as an especially cruel and hard-hearted people, even less as particularly careless people who live only in the present. But just take a look at our old penal code in order to understand how much trouble it takes on this earth to breed a “People of Thinkers” (by that I mean the European people among whom today we still find a maximum of trust, seriousness, tastelessness, and practicality, and who, with these characteristics, have a right to breed all sorts of European mandarins). These Germans have used terrible means to make themselves a memory in order to attain mastery over their vulgar basic instincts and their brutal crudity: think of the old German punishments, for example, stoning (—the legend even lets the mill stone fall on the head of the guilty person), breaking on the wheel (the most characteristic invention and specialty of the German genius in the realm of punishment!), impaling on a stake, ripping people apart or stamping them to death with horses (“quartering”), boiling the criminal in oil or wine (still done in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries), the well-loved practice of flaying (“cutting flesh off in strips”), carving flesh out of the chest, and probably covering the offender with honey and leaving him to the flies in the burning sun. With the help of such images and procedures people finally retained five or six “I will not’s” in the memory, and, so far as these precepts were concerned, they gave their word in order to live with the advantages of society—and it’s true! With the assistance of this sort of memory people finally came to “reason”!—Ah, reason, seriousness, mastery over emotions, this whole gloomy business called reflection, all these privileges and showpieces of human beings: how expensive they were! How much blood and horror is at the bottom of all “good things”! . . .
Those were just some "implications for the rule of law" posts...
I was going to use them to help justify water boarding Richard Nixon instead of simply pardoning him... but then I started to feel sorry for the guy when I realized that his having to resign was probably a worse punishment than any "racking" of the ex-President may have served... and the rest of my day got overtaken by events,
C'est la vie.
sue hanes said...
I have to be honest - Abso - I never thought that it was a big deal that Nixon resigned.
But having read different things about it - I came to see that it WAS a big deal.
And I alway think that after having made a HUGE mistake like that - kinda like Clinton having s*x with Monica Lewinski (y?) - that just - Punishment Enough Would Be Letting Your Family Down -Letting Your Friends Down - People That Trusted You - And Being the President of the United States - and knowing that everyone all over the World KNEW what you had done - well - that has to be some sort of Punishment - don't you think - Abso?
I know when I realize that I've hurt someone - done something wrong - I Am Very Hard And Unforgiving To Myself.
sue hanes said...
And - Abso - I think that Waterboarding is a Cruel and Unusual Punishment - Something that I would not tolerate UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCDES.
And furthermore - I don't like any kind of torture - mean or not.
Some people deserve to be tortured...
Yes they do -o -FJ.
But doesn't it take a mean person to torture someone else?
Don't you have to get a sort of satisfaction out of hurting someone else?
We all love to be mean. We just dom't think it "proper" to admit it. ;)
I guess u r rtht - -FJ.
I am Really hard on myself -FJ.
That's just how I am.
-FJ the Dangerous and Extreme MAGA Jew said...
Why be hard on youself? You're no different than the rest of us.
In the days of the Romans, rich families used to hire gladiators to fight to the death in honour of their dear departed friends and family members. In the days of "Shakespeare", Shylock of "Mrchant of Venice" longs to torture his "Christan" debtor...
Very Glad - because it was the Right Thing.
