at the crossroads of my life

Since this is the very last day in my house and the town I've loved for twenty-four
years I thought I should get a few things off  my chest - then when I'm in the new
house I can turn over a new leaf and become a kinder - more gentler - Liberal.

~~~
Miscellaneous gripes:
~when I am  washing my car in the driveway and a neighbor says - when you
are done you can come over and wash mine - although I almost never wash
my car in the driveway - this is just a classic example of the gripe
~when I watch a good movie but in the end I don't 'get it'
~when I see just enough of those little lines that run across the bottom of the tv
screen on CNN to pique my interest but not enough to get the point of it
~when I struggle for a long time to open a jar lid - and probably loosen it - and a
guy effortlessly finishs the job with a seg on his face
~when after a tiring shopping session I cannot do the subtraction in the checkbook
~when I hurriedly wash my hands and put on hand lotion only to discover that I have
not rinsed all the soap off
~when I rush into a room to get something but then have to go back to the original
room to remember what I wanted to get - for me this is legion
~when I run over a curb - that always makes me feel so stupid
~when instead of saying just thank you to a compliment I smile and wholeheartedly
agree with the person
~when I don't get a grocery cart for a few items but then get more than I can carry
continually dropping them
~and much much more
Sounds like human foibles to me. We may not have the same ones, but we've all got them.
Cube - I'm about as human as they come - but I do occasionally fantasize about being an alien.:)
You don't have to actually become one... do you?
Speedy G: I have never forgiven them for first killing Ripley and then turning her into an alien. Let's not give Sue any ideas ;-)
If I were shooting for an alien, I'd pick a Vulcan. I guess I would be an alien without a home since the planet Vulcan was destroyed...
Planet Vulcan did NOT get destroyed. Else where would they get Spock's "essence" restored after his Genesis planet rebirth? That happened in a parallel universe, not OURS! ;)
I hate temporal paradoxi.
Speedy - That scene was Ripley at her best!
When those movies came out I bought them and watched them so many times I could recite the lines in my sleep.
That's why I sometimes wonder which I am.
Alien is the true form.
Aliens is the best - with the Marines.
I even liked Aliens 3.
But Alien Resurrection was a bit over the top for me.
Cube - Ripley is a fictional hero to me - to the point that I sometimes forget she isn't real.
The backward swan dive into the molten lead: what courage and dedication to saving the world.
And in Alien Resurrection - that last scene with S. Weaver and Winonna Ryder:
'I'm a stranger here myself.'
It doesn't get much better than that. :)
JC - Speaking of planets being destroyed - ever watch Forbidden Planet?
A 1956 sci-fi classic starring Leslie Nielsen.
In the end they blow Altair-IV
away as they head back to Earth.
This is a must-see movie for anyone who even likes sci-fi just a little.
Forbidden planet is why I wear my "DADD T-Shirt"... ;)
DADD (Dads Against Daughters Dating - Shoot the First One and the Word Will Get Around).
JC - I need to get my son-in-law
one of those.
When his first daughter was born - now 12 - he would say this as if to a prosective suitor for her:
'This better be a delivery cause there aren't no pickups here.
:-)
I know it's a guy - father - thing.
I watch talk shows and time after time I have seen the celebrity dads all express the same sentiments - no matter what the age of their daughters.
I've got the Forbidden Planet tin gift set which included a replica of the robot along with the DVDs. Still, the blowing up of Altair IV didn't take the emotional toll on me as watching Vulcan go boom.
Unless they plan on temporal mechanics in the next film, it was not necessary to kill off the Vulcan planet. Then again, they did kill off Spock to much fanfare and then brought him back in the next film.
BTW I'm a mom, but I still love Joe Conservative's DADD shirt. Maybe a MADD version might sell... I'm more strict with the girls than Mr. Cube.
Joe Conservative: We will see about the destruction of Vulcan in the next film. I grant you that in the same way Spock's death was ammended,
so may that of the Vulcan planet. I hate temporal mechanics as much as Janeway.
Sue: My eldest niece, a huge Alien fan, just turned 25 and I found her a t-shirt that read Nostromo and had the ship's call letters. She was very pleased and wore it the next time she came to my house. OK, I also gave her money because she has to live, but I know the shirt was the best gift. It showed in her face.
I have mixed luck with finding special gifts for my nieces and nephews. Some are way easier than others. I know you have some little ones, what's your experience?
cube - I had seen FP long ago but what stuck in my mind was the 'monster' created by - I can't remember his name - in his alter ego (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.)
Then I bought it on vhs and watched it many times. Seeing Leslie Nielson in a straight role after the airplane movie was hard - I kept thinking I should be laughing.
I envy you for the robot/dvd set.
cube - That's cool about the t-shirt for your niece.
My oldest grandchild is 12. So I have 12 years of showering the kids with gifts. And I am finding that much of it may have been 'unwanted' by my daughters.
So I have learned now for the big gifts like Christmas and birthday to simply ask what they want and pick from the list.
But there are always special things I will buy as I get to know them - and bond.
Once I bought a coloring book and crayons for my five year old grandson - because he is creative.
He accepted them and used them - but said that perhaps the next time I should get something more appropriate for a boy.
You never know what they are going to say.
Kids that age love to color. That comment may have come from his parents...
