here's one by Robert Louis Stevenson...

and then I'm going to call it quits for tonight with some Beatle lyrics...

that's poetry too, isn't it?

~~~
How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!
Up in the air and over the wall
Till I can see so wide,
Rivers and tress and cattle and all
Over the countryside-
Till I look down on the garden green
Down on the roof so brown-
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!
Never cared much for this song since to me it seemed that it was making reference to weed, pot what ever you wish to call it.
The year was 1967, the year I ended a tour in Nam and had seen a disaster caused by two fools smoking pot instead of paying attention while on perimeter for a small unit. Out of 36 men only 8 survived.
That incident was permanently etched in my mind as was the site of the "roaches" in the "hole" where the two fools were suppose to be guarding the perimeter and instead were "getting high with a little help from their friends".
Yes it was a popular thing to do in Nam and the song was very popular as well but not with me.
I had never used and took the attitude of hatred of the "dope".
Still have no use for it after all these years but have mellowed from hate to strong dislike.
As for the Beatles and their songs, Hey Jude has stayed with me after all these years. Released in 68 as the "B" side to Revolution(A side) it became the hit rather than the studio's preferred A side. 8 minutes long but a great song.
Ticker - I knew when I chose this really great song to end last
night's evening of poetry to help me get through the unbearbable waiting that this woman has put us through while she decides what her offer on our house should be - I knew SOMEONE would pounce on the word 'high' and bring up the subject of pot.
I just didn't think it would be you, Ticker.
Ticker - Let me say this about your 'pot' and VN story.
I have issues with the VN War which I would like to discuss with you. But now is not the time for that discussion.
But as for pot being responsible for the tragic deaths of the troops as you talked about, were not guns respnsible for the deaths of the 30-31 people at Va. Tech?
Get what I mean?
Pot doesn't kill people, people kill people.
~I said that
Ticker - And dumbasses who stockpiled guns carelessly so that the shooter could get his hands on them were responsible for the Va.
Tech deaths.
If we don't control guns in a responsible way(and I'm not talking about taking away anybody's guns but simply suggesting that we have more responsible gun control) then we will all be dumbasses with blood on our hands.
And I hope that this is not the end of any gun control conversation.
As I recall,Ticker, no one said that the shooter at Va. Tech was friggin stoned.
Ticker - You are ALWAYS welcome here to say anything you like.
And am I not welcome to say anything I like on this blog?
It is my blog, you know.
Don't get mad.
Someone once said:
Anger is like throwing stones at a wasp's nest.
Ticker, I want you to give your opinions here. But I may not always agree with you.
I said the fools in Nam were friggin stoned. I never alluded or mentioned VATech in any way.
When the Constitution of the US is changed we can have a conversation on gun control. Until then I stand on my rights to bear arms, own arms
and damn well use them to defend family, property and self. All states need to have the Castle law. It is shown that in towns and states with few or no gun control laws, crime is lower. Kennasaw Georgia is a perfect example. requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition.
Crime rate dropped 89% while it only dropped 10% state wide. The rate has not increased one iota since the passage of this law.
Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, significantly, perhaps, the city's crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent.
I own guns of all description and ammunition to go with them and am an expert in their use as is my wife and soon to be grandchildren who reside in this home.
When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
Thomas Jefferson
And they are ignorant that the purpose of the sword is to save every man from slavery."
Marcus Annaeus Lucanus Roman poet (A.D. 39-65)
Requiring every head of household to own a gun is the best gun control and the duty of that head of household should be to teach all members of age of understanding to use and respect the guns in the home. That is true gun control and that is crime control.
Ticker - I know you weren't alluding to Va. Tech.
But I am.
You see, you were going off on pot as the reason those troops were killed in your story about Vietnam.
But the real reason those troops were killed in Vietnam is because our country was in Vietnam and they shouldn't have been.
Don't you get it, Ticker?
It wasn't the pot that killed the troops, it was our country's policy that killed 58,000 American men.
Just the way careless gun control killed those people at Virginia Tech.
When are we going to get together and say: Hey, let's have better gun control. No threat to any responsible gun owners, just a longer waiting period so the prospective shooters can't get their hands on guns to kill innocent people.
Something to prevent this careless and irresponsible gun ownership so innocent people don't have to die.
That's all I'm saying, Ticker.
Let's just stop fighting each other and get our shit together so we can be the country we were meant to be.
But that won't happen without trust and unity -and a little civility.
