A Christmas Poem

Oh, if only I had known! Said the keeper of the inn. ~ But no hint to me was shown, And I didn't let them in. ~~~~~Yes, a star gleamed overhead, But I couldn't read the skies, And I'd given every bed to the very rich and wise.~~~~~ And she was so poorly clad, And he hadn't much to say! But no room for them I had, So I ordered them away.~~~~~She seemed tired, and it was late And they begged so hard, that I , Feeling sorry for her state, In the stable let them lie.~~~~~Had I turned some rich man out Just to make a place for them, T'would have killed, beyond a doubt, All my trade at Bethlehem.~~~~~Then there came the wise men three To the stable, with the morn, Who announced they'd come to see The great King who had been born.~~~~~And they brought Him gifts of myrrh, Costly frankincense and gold, And a great light shone on her In the stable, bleak and cold.~~~~~All my patrons now are dead And forgotten, but todayAll the world to peace is led By the ones I sent away.~~~~~It was my unlucky fate To be born that inn to own, Against Christ I shut my gate----Oh, if only I had known!

I'm not for keeping Christ out of Christmas. My girls went to Catholic schools and there was always a play that reminded us of the reason for the season.

I object to the commercialism... the lights, the trees, the shopping, the presents. I enjoy spending time with my family, but you can keep the rest.

Cube - I totally agree with you.
The worst thing about Christmas is the shopping. It is so commercial. I like the trees, the lights, and the presents - but the shopping is so bad.

I love the Christmas carols - but Christmas is definitely too commercial. And it just keeps getting worse.

At our house, we put up the tree together, but when it comes time to take down the tree, everyone makes themselves scarce and the job falls to me. They're the ones who wanted the tree, but I'm the one stuck with wrapping up the ornaments and putting everything away.

I'm just going for gift cards this year because I'm not feeling the Christmas spirit.

Cube - I'm trying to get you in the Christmas spirit. There's nothing wrong with giving gift cards and money at Christmas. We are doing a lot of that.

That has nothing to do with the Christmas spirit. It's the real meaning of Christmas that counts.
I'm forcing myself to have the Christmas spirit because it only comes once a year and I don't want it to pass me by.

I put up the tree by myself and take it down and put away the ornaments. It's my way of celebrating the season.

I don't wan't to make you feel bad just because I'm not so into the Christmas spirit this year...

Cube - I don't feel bad - I just want to make sure that you get into the Christmas spirit if it is all possible. After all - it only comes once a year.

I saw on the news that there was a tornado warning in Florida. That's unusual - isn't it?

Tornadoes are unusual in Florida, but they do happen. We're keeping our eyes open. Thanks for your concern.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I know that tordadoes are quick and deadly - but also that hurricanes are terrible also. You have warning for them but there is no way of stopping them. I hope you are out of the way of hurricanes.

It is just luck that we have not been struck by a tornado.

Tornadoes are horrible because they're so fast. At least with a hurricane we have time to get the heck out of the way.

One year, there was a hurricane in the area and my sister had planned that we would throw all of our animals into the back of my husband's truck and we'd take off. My husband refused to go because he was going to stay with our house. Thank God that hurricane didn't hit us because my sister would've blown a fuse and that wouldn't have been a pretty sight.

Cube - It's true that tornadoes are fast. But a few years back I heard a guy say on tv that he would rather die than be as scared as he was in the hurricane.
I know they must frightening.

There's no good natural disaster.

You're right. There are no good natural disasters. In 2004, we were hit by 3 hurricanes, Charley, Frances, and Jeanne. We were out of power for 10 days. Thank goodness we were prepared... generators to keep the fridge and the freezer running and we had plenty of food and water.

The first morning, I hooked up the coffee maker to the power supply and made coffee. My husband looked at me and said, "I love you."

sue hanes said...

Cube - That is a nice story about your husband saying 'I love you' because you made the coffee.

When we lived in Virginia we had a power outage due to snow and our fireplace was a lifesaver.

Now our snow is melting due to rain. It's just as well because it is at the point where it's just lying around looking dirty.

We have a fireplace as well, but we haven't used it in years. I don't like how it makes the house smell and our youngest has asthma so it doesn't work out that well for us.

When our power went out, we mostly used our grill. A few days into the power shortage, we had cooked up a bunch of food and called our neighbor... do you want a hot meal? She said, Yes! So my daughter brought her over BBQ chicken, macaroni and cheese, and green beans. I know that's not a fabulous dinner, but considering the circumstances, she was happy for it.

I read a lot of books during that period.

Cube - Power outages are not so bad in nice weather but in the winter it seems like it will never get warm again.

That was nice of you to give dinner to your neighbor.

A few years back I didn't mind driving in the snow but now that I'm approaching old age :] I don't like to be on the road in it. Snow isn't so bad but ice is.
I just try to stay home when we have a snow storm. Reading is a good idea.

We watch out for our neighbor across the street. During that same 10 day power outage, we bought way too much ice and asked our neighbor if she wanted a bag. She did. I thought about it for a few minutes and then called her back and asked her if she had a cooler. She didn't have one so one of my daugthers took over one of ours.

As far as driving in snow, I wouldn't want to do it. I've never done it and it's not something I would ever want to do. Snow is bad.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I guess that's what neighbors are for - to help each other. Sounds as if you are a good neighbor.

Driving in snow can be bad - but if you are careful sometimes it is not so bad. I prefer plain old dry roads myself.

We watch out for each other. Once I spotted a teenager at the end of my carport and he was spitting and smoking. I went outside with my German Shepherd and asked him what he was doing in my yard.

He answered that he lived down the street so I told him to hang out over there and not in my yard.

Meanwhile my dog was sensing the tension and she was rearing up and barking at the kid. I guess he didn't want his parents to see him smoking, but I didn't appreciate him being at my house. He left.

A minute later my neighbor from across the street, who saw the whole incident, called me and asked me if everything was OK. She said was a second from calling 911.

sue hanes said...

Cube - We had some teenages living next door. The father was from Italy and didn't live there with them all of the time. One night they gave big rowdy party and my husband suspected they were smoking pot on the screened-in porch so he called the cops.

That's how we looked after our neighbors.

Actually there was an older woman living alone across the street and we did look after her.

Nice monologue there, SUe.

One of my students told me she was to do an ad lib monologue by Mary at her church...she was going on and on, telling me what she might add, and I said "How about 'and that darned STAR is so BRIGHT I can barely see where we're going!'" She loved it and thought she might add it; might get a laugh, huh?

MERRY CHRISTMAS! xxx Z
