The Months

What better time to post a poem about the months than in January.  Sara Coleridge
has written a clever one so here it is: January brings the snow~Makes our feet and fingers glow.~~~~~~February brings the rain, Thaws the frozen lake again.~~~~~~March brings breezes loud and shrill, Stirs the dancing daffodil.~~~~~~April brings the primrose sweet,Scatters daisies at our feet.~~~~~~May brings flocks of pretty lambs, Skipping by their fleecy dams.~~~~~~June brings tulips, lilies, roses, Fills the children's hands with posies.~~~~~~Hot July brings cooling showers, Apricots, and gilly flowers.~~~~~~August brings the sheaves of corn, Then the harvest home is born.~~~~~~Warm September brings the fruit;Sportsmen then begin to shoot.~~~~~~Fresh October brings the pheasant; Then to gather nuts is pleasant.~~~~~~Dull November brings the blast; Then the the leaves are whirling fast.~~~~~~Chill December brings the sleet,Blazing fire, and Christmas treat.~~~~~~I wonder what gilly flowers are?  I guess I could google it.

I don't read much poetry nowadays. I just don't have the time. To be honest, Coleridge wasn't the kind of poet that I read when I did have the time.

In her poem, it's funny how I get stuck with January's snow, when I'm such a tropical flower.

BTW I always thought of a gilly flower as a carnation, but I may be wrong.

First - Isn't my blog awful. It is so messed up and I don't know how to fix it.

I don't read poetry often. I get on a kick and then I read it. Right now I'm reading Edna St.
Vincent Millay. Do you know her poem Renescense? It's one of my favorites.

You are so right. I googled it and the gily flower is the same as a carnation. You are so smart.

As far as the structure of your blog, have you tried putting
after each line when you're using html mode?
puts in one space and if you put a bunch of them in, it will give you as many spaces as you want.

I like St. Vincent Millay's Renascence, especially the part about infinity.

I just realized it won't let me type "figure when you capitalize a comma" Br "figure when you capitalize a period"

sue hanes said...

Cube - When you say 'it won't let me' that sounds as if it is something that is alive. Know what I mean?

cube said...

It's not alive. It's just a different computer code. The one that blogger uses for your blog will only recognize html script when it's in html mode.

See below how it reads you can use some HTML tags... those are simple ones that it allows. The one I suggested is a little more complex.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I'm lucky I can use the computer like I do. I have no idea what the letters mean and cannot do anything on it that is at all complicated.

I'm just not computerized.

cube said...

Hey, I remember a time when computers were fed data cards with notches. God help you if just one of those cards got out of sequence... it would be a programming disaster.

I am happy with today's computers and can only wish to live long enough to see quantum computers in action.

I've always thought I was born too early. I should've been born in the future sometime.

sue hanes said...

Cube - You are too smart to live in the present. But that's the way it goes. You have to live where you are - and make the best of it.

cube said...

And I do. That's what science fiction is for...

sue hanes said...

Cube - Science fiction helps us get through the present times when we don't like how things are going. Unfortunately there isn't enough good science fiction.

Wouldn't you agree with that?

cube said...

There is a lot of dystopic science fiction out there which is worse that what is going on in the real world. If you look you can find stuff that's not so bad. There are always mysteries about about serial killers ;-)

sue hanes said...

Cube - I'm not interested in mysteries about serial killers.
And the science fiction that I am interested in is in movies. I don't tend to read science fiction.

Have you ever read Impact? It's an interesting book. I liked it.
It's about the only one I've read.

cube said...

I love mysteries, even ones about serial killers. I haven't read Impact, but it sounds interesting.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I don't read fiction these days. Mostly biographies - about the presidents.

Impact is a lightweight book but it has a good theme to it. Good ending.

More snow coming our way. Time to keep the fleece jacket out. Low temps.

cube said...

I read biographies also but usually those of scientists or mathematicians.

Sorry about more snow coming your way. Thank goodness for fleece jackets.

We had a recent cold spell, but today it warmed up a bit by afternoon. We don't sustain very cold temps during the day when it's super sunny like it is today.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Maybe we won't get the snow. It's only supposed to be an inch and it's clear and sunny so far.

We have a basketball game to go to. And maybe pizza after.

I hope you are having a nice sunny warm day there.

sue hanes said...

Did you hear about the Wisconsin/IU game? Wisconsin is rated 3rd in the nation and IU is not ranked and we beat them. The fans rushed the floor after the game. It was pretty exciting. Only a 3 point difference.

cube said...

I hadn't heard, but good for you and other IU fans.

It's getting chilly again today. I'm not wearing my usual shorts and t-shirt that's for sure. By 1 o'clock, it was 54 degrees and we're not expected to rise much above that temp. It is sunny and the sky is a windex blue so I choose to be grateful for that.

sue hanes said...

Cube - We lost the game and the oher team wasn't supposed to be that good. That's the way it goes.

We started out with blue skies but that quickly changed to cloudy and a small amount of snow.

I could use some Florida weather about now.

cube said...

You win some and you lose some. Easier said than done... I'm still upset over Alabama's loss to Auburn.

My in laws live in Cape Cod and they're coming down to Florida at the end of this week. They're pretty fed up with the snow, too.

They'll love it down here.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Good for your in-laws. They are smart to be going to Florida at this time of year.
New Jersey got 15 inches in some parts. Fortunately - we are dodging the large amounts.

Enjoy your visit with the in-laws.

cube said...

Much golf, much good food... fun for me, not so much, but I'll be all right ;-)

sue hanes said...

Cube - The wife is always the one who gets all the work. I hope you do have a good time. I wish I could sample your cooking! I'm sure it is good.

sue hanes said...

The golf I could do without. I would not be very good at it.

cube said...

It is safe to say that my husband didn't marry me for my cooking skills because back then I could and often did burn water.

Over the years I've learned a few recipes... if you like Mediterranean food, you'll like what we make when we get together with my in laws.

As far as golf goes, I'm not good either... I always want to smash the ball. I have to learn control and that's not easy for me.

sue hanes said...

Cube - It's funny but I just learned cooking by doing. I had a great cookbook called Cooking for Two and used that a lot. Mostly I learned by experience.
I've done some good stuff and some bad stuff.

Golf seems hard to learn for me.
It looks hard to play but people love the game. I'm sure that control is a big part of it.

cube said...

My cooking guide (before Food Network came to be) was the Betty Crocker cookbook. I needed help with the basics and I found it there.

I, too, have made good stuff and bad stuff. You can always order a pizza if it's bad enough ;-)

Golf something I want to tackle, but learning control will be hard. You're not supposed to slam the ball, it's more of a finesse thing. I never learned finesse in tennis. It was mostly kill the ball!

sue hanes said...

Cube - Betty Crocker cookbook is a good learning one.

I got on a kick where I fixed stir fry often. You could do just about anything with it.
Sometimes it was good and other times not so.

Tennis is a game that I like. I never got into it but I wish I had.

I like it so much better than golf.

cube said...

Betty Crocker is a great first cookbook.

Stir fry is really good, but you have to get the sauce right and not let the veggies get too smushy.

Here's a tennis related bad first date in college... I fractured my opponent's ankle during the match. Let's just say there was never a second date.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Wow. Way to go with your first date. I never even got to a match with tennis. Just batting the ball around the court was as far as I got.

sue hanes said...

I have a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook that I use. It is also good.

cube said...

I used to play tennis all the time in college. I did strive to play with opponents who played better than I did. My tennis coach was one of my favorites to pick on and sometimes he'd even trade rackets with me, which made my day, because he had an excellent racket which was way better than mine.

One time an opponent and I were locked in a tie for 45 minutes and we couldn't break it so we just gave up. She was the closest player to my game that I ever played.

Date boy, who eventually got his ankle fractured, was deceptive about how well he could play. I would've taken it easy on him had he been honest about his lack of skills. I never set out to hurt anyone.

cube said...

Better Homes & Gardens is a good cookbook too. If I have a recipe that I know I've made before and my family eats it, I'll go to a recipe book. If I'm just looking for something different for dinner, then I'll search Food Network.com.

To me, the hardest part of cooking for your family is coming up with new dishes.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I agree with you that it is hard to come up with something new to cook for the family. I got in a rut and cooked the same things week after week.

Then I would come up with something new. But it was hard to be original.

I wish I had taken tennis more seriously. It is a game that you can play the rest of your life. But then so is golf. I prefer tennis to golf.

I believe you that you didn't didn't hurt him on purpose. I can't imagine doing that.

cube said...

It was not easy to come up with new dishes when the girls were little, but now that their palates have matured, they're much more likely to try something new.

It's much easier now that they're big girls.

Tennis was a big part of my recreation life back in the day and very enjoyable, but I think it's much more strenuous than golf. That's why I'm thinking of taking up golf in my golden years.

I'm not there yet... there's still some spring in this chicken ;-)

sue hanes said...

Cube - You are so right that the younger kids are harder to please - when it comes to food.

Yes - tennis is more strenuous than golf - but don't you think that golf requires technical concentration. They are two different sports entirely.

There's some spring left in this chicken too. You are only as old as you think you are - if you know what I mean.

cube said...

I can't believe how much their palates have matured over the years. I remember putting all kinds of fruits and vegetables in front of them only to have them be rejected.

Now they're bringing home the same stuff I tried to feed them when they were little. It never ceases to amaze me.

There's strategy in tennis, too.
For example, if your opponent is right-handed, you want to steer the ball to their left, their weaker hand. You basically watch for weak points and then try to exploit them, but you still have to be able to run around the court and that's not easy when you're up there in age.

Golf involves a lot of strategy, but it's less strenuous physically than tennis.

I'm OK with strategy... my knees aren't so good with strenuous activity any more.

At this point in my life, I'm still good with activity, but I know that I'll pay for it the next day when I have to use an NSAID to be able to walk around.

sue hanes said...

Cube - My girls eat healthy now too. Different than when they were growing up.

Sounds as if you know the game of tennis even if you are not playing it anymore.

What's NSAID? My knees used to be worse than they are now. It's as if they got better somehow.

cube said...

Our girls are growing up. Good thing.

I wish my knees would cooperate as far as tennis goes...

NSAID is an acronym for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. I wish MY knees would get better... I could fracture someone else's ankle ;-)

sue hanes said...

Cube - One of the things I finally noticed about my girls is that they are younger than me and they have different tastes than me and see the world differently than me. That sounds weird I know but it took me a while for that to sink in.

Do you think that this winter is a hard one? We are definitely having more snow and low temps than other winters.

Is Florida having cooler weather than usual?

cube said...

I'm totally OK with the fact that my daughters don't agree with me on everything. My husband and I raised them to be independent women... discussions at our house can get quite vigorous, but it can also be fun.

cube said...

Yes, this winter has been awfully cold. Obviously, we in Florida didn't suffer the hardships that others in the country did, but it was colder than I could remember.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Our daughters are also independent - which I like.

We had about 6 inches of snow last night. This winter is definitely a hard one. With the constant snow and low temps.

cube said...

Independent daughters... gotta love 'em.

6 inches of snow! Darn, that is a lot. And here I am complaining that I have to wear pants on occasion. I'm sorry. I hope your weather improves soon.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Whatever you are used to that is what you do.

After all that snow then now we get the lower temps. Activities are being cancelled. I can't remember a winter this bad for a long time. The Farmer's Almanac predicted a hard winter and they were right.

My daughter lives in no. Alabama and they are having unusually cold temps. They just don't have the snow.

Yes - I like the independent daughters. They know their own mind.

I lived in New York for 7 years but I didn't have to go out and work in it. I was just a kid and, back then, snow was fun and we got to skip school.

It has been a hard winter. Look at Atlanta last week... the 9th largest city in the US shutdown for days because of a few inches of snow. Unbelievable.

sue hanes said...

Cube - When I was little it seemed as if there was so much snow. And I was fascinated by it.
It seemed beautiful to me.

I guess the problem in Atlanta was the ice over the snow.

We have about six inches on the ground and it just keeps coming down. Just a little at a time - but it keeps coming. And it's cold out.

cube said...

Back then I loved the snow. In Manhattan, Riverside Park had levels with stairs and the snow would accumulate along the sides. I used to go over the railing and jump into the snow bank and then dig my way out. My mom was horrified, but I thought it was exhilarating.

cube said...

You're right about ice being the problem in Atlanta, but the reason they developed the ice was because they didn't ice down the streets before the storm and the officials closed schools and jobs all at once. A recipe for pandemonium.

cube said...

I meant to say ice down the streets, not ice. Sorry.

sue hanes said...

Cube - These southern towns that don't get winter weather very often have a bad time of it.

Huntsville - where my daughater lives - closes schools if there is just a hint of snow to come.
They just don't know how to deal with it.

We are supposed to get some more snow this morning. It won't be much but it just keeps coming.

cube said...

The Southern towns don't have the readiness of their Northern brethren, that's for sure.

I watch HLN for my morning news and since they're based in Atlanta, I'm hoping they'll learn from their storm two weeks ago, and get a handle on this next storm. They say they're trying. We'll see.

We live is such disparate climates...

sue hanes said...

Cube - I hope they are more ready for this ice storm than the last one. I hate to think of the power outages. Especially in the cold weather. This is going to be a bad one.

We are having cold but not snow right now. The storm seems to be passing us by.

How are things in sunny Florida?

cube said...

Looks like Atlanta heeded the scare they got 2 weeks ago and this ice storm was handled much better. Too bad North Carolina didn't learn from Atlanta's early mistake.

In Florida, we got lots of rain on Wednesday afternoon. In fact, 15 people were stuck atop one of the roller coaster rides at Busch Gardens (60 ft. up) with rain and thunder boomers for 3 hours! I'd be a nervous wreck.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I don't have to worry about getting stuck on a roller coaster because I wouldn't go on one! I don't go on any amusement park rides. They scare me and make me feel sick. In fact - I shy away from even going to amusement parks.

We are having a break in the weather. Although we are supposed to get some snow tonight - it probably won't be much.

I feel for those people who are without power.

cube said...

All my life I was one of those people who would ride a roller coaster 7 or more times. Then my daughter was hired to work at Busch Gardens while she was still in high school. I heard so many horror stories that I've only been on 1 roller coaster ever since... Sheikra... a 90 degree drop from 200 feet.

Glad your weather is cooperating a bit.

I feel awful for those poor folks without power. Times are trying enough without it.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Stay away for tne roller coasters. One accident is plenty.
That woman not that long ago fell out and died.

We got three more inches last night. This is definitely a bad winter. Rain is forcast for next week so that should get rid of most of it.
