Labor Day

Labor Day was originally formed to recognize the economic and social contributions of American workers. It was voted a holiday by Congress after a number of workers were killed during the Pullman Strike of 1894 when Grover Cleveland was president.~~~~~ Now it is a day that signifies the last time white should be worn and the beginning of the school year.~~~In sports - it is the first day of the NFL and college football games.~~~~~And it is generally celebrated by barbeques and end of summer vacations.

I had no idea about Labor Day. You are definitely my go to person for any history related stuff.

We in Florida are still going to do BBQs and go swimming, but this does seem like the end of summer, doesn't it? It just flew by.

Cube - My go to person is Wikipedia! It is interesting - though - how we don't even celebrate Labor Day for what it is all about. It's just become a fun holiday. Oh well...

No - it doesn't seem like the end of summer. It just flew by. And over all - we really haven't had such a lot of really hot days. Not like last year.

We are going to wish these hot days back if the Farmer's Almanac is correct. They are predicting a bitterly cold winter. At least for the midwest. It may not be true for Florida.

cube said...

Wikipedia? And here I thought you knew this stuff by heart. I'm shocked ;-)

We had a relatively cold winter last winter. I can't believe how cool it's been this summer for us. We haven't had the heat waves the mid west and the west have had. I'm missing the vapor.

sue hanes said...

Very funny.

You can have our vapor anytime you want it. We are due for a cool down anytime now. Just about two more days of 90's heat and it's going down.

I'm not outside that much so the heat wave hasn't bothered me. Although when it gets too bad the a/c doesn't work as well.

I hate it when I get a repeat. Makes me look stupid. I couldn't get it erased. So you'll just have to read it twice.

cube said...

I'll take the vapor. The A/C is what drives me crazy. It makes me cold during the summer because I wear less clothing. Being married to a polar bear doesn't help.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Me too - with the a/c. It gets so cold in here I wear my fleece jacket - which I like to do anyway. Mr.Sue doesn't get cold like I do. So I have to stay warm the best I can. By evening the house is warm and then I have to turn in down so it is comfortable for sleeping. It's hard to remember what it was like without the a/c. Especially in the car.

cube said...

I wear fleece in the winter, but in the summer it's way too hot, especially when I have to go in and out of the garage to do laundry, or take the dogs outside, etc. It's the drastic change of temperature that gets to me. As soon as Mr. Cube leaves, I turn up the thermostat so that when I do come in from outside, it's not like I'm walking into a freezer, but a pleasantly cool environment.

Mr. Cube isn't the only one that likes a cold room. I went for my yearly pap smear recently and when my OB/GYN came in, I must've looked like a popsicle to her because she gave me a big, bear hug and rubbed my arms to warm me up.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Our a/c is so cold that when I go into the garage to the car the heat feels good to me. Sometimes I don't know how to dress - cold in our house and hot outside. Tonight it's going to cool off some. The not so hot for the next week. Maybe it's the end of the 90's.

I'm the same way - turning the a/c so that it's not so cold in the house.

cube said...

My husband wants me to wear less clothes... he should be the one raising the thermostat.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I know my husband thinks that about me. He doesn't say much but I do tend to like to wear my fleece jacket in the a/c. He always wears shorts and a t-shirt.
I wear my jeans and jacket. In the really hot weather I have to do without the jacket!

We had a cooling off spell here but in the next few days it's going to be in the 90's again.

cube said...

Basically, I tell him that if you want to see me in less clothing, then turn up the thermostat.

cube said...

BTW you called me Z again at my blog.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I am so sorry I called you Z. I try to be very careful about that. My apologies.

I can never remember whether to turn up or down the thermostat. If you turn it up - then it is colder - right?

cube said...

It's OK to call me Z so long as you know that I'm the polyhedron and not the letter ;-)

Turning up the thermostat is making it hotter because you're turning up the temperature.

sue hanes said...

Cube - It is not ok for me to call you Z. Sometimes I just slip up.

We are getting into the 90's again in the next few days. Pretty soon the leaves will begin to turn. That is one of the advantages of living in the midwest. The fall colors are wonderful.

Football game on Saturday. Woo-hoo.

cube said...

We all slip up at times. We're just human. It's all good.

I prefer the NFL games to the college ones, but I did watch the University of Alabama games when my daughter attended. They were #1.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I'm nothing if not human.

I just watch the college games to have something to do. We don't watch the NFL games.

Except I sometimes watch the Super Bowl - if it's interesting.

cube said...

I love me my football.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I like football too. It's fun to go to the college games as there is so much going on. Even though our seats are in the nosebleed section.

cube said...

I prefer to sit in my Lazy Boy recliner and watch the NFL on TV. Every game I ever attended was too full of drunk guys acting like drunk guys.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I'm with you. But the husband likes to go to the games and experience all the hoopla.

At these college games you can't have alcohol in the stadium. You can't even take a bottle of water in. You have to buy it there.

cube said...

Everyone drinks before the game at the tail gate party, and then maybe have one over-priced beer at the stadium. That's what we used to do.

sue hanes said...

Cube - The students here start drinking on Friday morning of game weekend. They drink at the tailgate parties also. But no alcohol is allowed inside of the stadium. Of course they go to their cars and drink at halftime also.

cube said...

We all did that back in the day. It's cool as long as it's not my daughter ;-)

sue hanes said...

Cube - I was lucky that both of my daughters were in a Christian organization and never did really drink. They sure didn't take after their mother. : ] My huband belonged to a fraternity and I had a great time at the parties. Even though I'm opposed to fraternities and sororities.

cube said...

I'm glad my girls haven't taken after their mother either :-)

sue hanes said...

Cube - Now I don't believe that. I'm sure they have gotten many good characteristics from their mother.

Going to be gone until Friday night visiting my daughter. Have a good couple of days. : ]

cube said...

I'm sure they've gotten some good characteristics (not my math gene). I just don't want them to get the bad ones.

Have a good time!

sue hanes said...

Cube - Thanks. It's good to be back home again.

I can't imagine what bad genes you have that they could have gotten.

We are having beautiful fall weather right now. Some rain but mostly sunshine and mild.

cube said...

Glad you made it back safe and sound.

As far as bad genes go, we all have a dark side. Watched the University of Alabama vs. Texas A&M game with my youngest daughter on Saturday and she certainly inherited the fanatical football fan gene from me. I don't know if that's bad or good ;-)

We're still hot as heck here with thunderstorms in the afternoon. In fact the Tampa Bucs vs Saints game had to be postponed for one hour and 9 minutes on Sunday because of lightning.

sue hanes said...

Cube - The ardent football fan gene doesn't sound bad to me. I'm a little bit of a sports fan myself.

We had two absolutely beautiful days here. Sunny and cool. Now today is overcast. Don't know if it's going to rain or not.

Went to a soccer match yesterday. It was a perfect day for it. Unfortunately it ended in a tie.

cube said...

It's one thing to be a fan, but my daughter and I get pretty loud when watching a football game featuring one of our favorite teams.

I'm glad the refs can't hear us when they give a bad call. Thankfully, you can't hear us either :-)

I gave up on soccer years ago. Tennis, too. Now I just watch football and lately a little golf, especially if Tiger Woods is doing poorly.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Nothing wrong with getting a little loud in your own home while watching football!

I like soccer although I don't really understand it very well.

I like to watch some of the golf tournaments - especially when Tiger Woods is doing well. :]

cube said...

During the Alabama game on Saturday, my daughter got more than a little loud. Remember she attended the Univ. of Alabama last year as a freshman and she remains personally invested in this team. Losing to QB Johnny Football Manzeil of Texas A&M was not an option.

Ref calls against Alabama were followed by vociferous yells laced with some cussing. Any points by Alabama were followed by more whoops, dancing, yells, etc. I attribute it to the exuberance of youth.

I'm glad Alabama beat Texas A&M or she would've been heartsick.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I would like to have been a mouse and seen and heard the goings on during the football game - at your house.

I'm glad Alabama won too.

I know how it is - we are the same about Indiana basketball.

cube said...

If you like noise and commotion, then my house is the place to be, especially during a football game.

That Alabama game was noisier than most because it meant so much to my daughter.

Indiana basketball. Is it your alma mater or that of one of your children?

sue hanes said...

Cube - Indiana University is the alma mater of both my husband and I and of both of our daughters. That is why we moved back here.

Basketball is the thing here. They had a good year.

cube said...

That is so cool. You kept it in the family. You should be proud.

Did someone call someone else Z?
:-)

It's me, GEEEZ's Z, from work as "anonymous"

cube...I guess you want to keep this quiet, but does your first name start with a Z??

hi, Sue!

sue hanes said...

Z - Occasionally I have been calling Cube - Z - out of habit of being at your blog.

Glad you stopped in.

sue hanes said...

Cube - It was mostly Mr.Sue's idea but it has worked out nicely. We are closer in distance to both of our daughters and can see them more often.

Plus this is a good place to live.
So much to do - concerts, plays, places to visit and of course sports for the husband. Great restaurants, shopping, etc.

The girls love to come here - not just to visit us but to be on the campus again.

sue hanes said...

Cube - The girls both majored in social work but are now stay-at-home moms.

cube said...

Z: lol. Yes, it's my biggest secret! ;-)

cube said...

It's good to like where you live. I'm glad you're happy with yours.

sue hanes said...

Cube - That almost sounds as if you are not happy about where you live. Is that true?

cube said...

No, I'm happy here, but I'd be happier if we were living in a more rural area, of course with a pool, cable, and wifi (I'm not that crazy) I would love to have a bunch of animals, more than the two large dogs and three cats that we have now.

sue hanes said...

Cube - What is wifi? I'm glad you are happy where you live. I'm not a rural person. I don't like to live more than a mile out of town.

And I'm not an animal person like you are. We've only had one dog at a time. She was a great dog and I loved having her.

cube said...

Wifi is the technology that gives you access to the internet. I wouldn't want to live anywhere that didn't have that, or cable. I'd die without TV.

I would love to have what I have now but in a more rural area so I could have a bunch of animals, too.

BTW I do know what it's like to have a beloved dog. Years after her passing, I still get weepy thinking about Dax, our German Shepherd We all loved her very much and still miss her.

It's just part of life to get over the hard parts ...

sue hanes said...

Cube - I'm not so big on TV. I like the internet better. I keep CNN on a lot - although I'm not that crazy about it. Just habit.

I do like the country - especially here in Indiana - but I don't want to live there.

Lady was our dog's name. She was a mutt from the animal shelter. The runt of the litter. They had to put her in a cage by herself because the others picked on her.
We fell in love with her right away.

The lady said to my daughter - Would you like to hold her? and that did it. She never put her down after that.

She was a sweet dog. My piano students all had to pet her before they left after their lesson.

cube said...

I'm huge about TV. I love it. Whether I'm watching it or not, I have to have the sound of on it all the time.

Lady sounds like our German Shepherd, Dax. We all loved that dog so much. I don't think it took much effort to have your students pet Lady on their way out from your lessons.

sue hanes said...

Cube - One of the reasons I don't watch much tv is that we have our main tv downstairs in the family room and I don't go down there much. Plus I don't stay up late anymore so I miss the evening shows.

It has a place in people's lives.
And there are some good things on.

What do you like the most? I used to like to watch the late talk shows but they are on too late here.

cube said...

My husband gets all crazy about this, but I like the TV on all the time.

I love shows about forensics, and during my hospitalization, I found the show "Castle'. It was one show that I had found recently.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I've never heard of the show 'Castle.'

I don't think I'd like the tv on all of the time. But I remember when the girls were little - in grade school - I would have soap operas on all day. I wouldn't sit and watch all of them but I knew the storylines. That helped me get through that period of my life.

cube said...

I hadn't heard of Castle either until I ended up in the hospital. It was one of those things.

sue hanes said...

If the truth were known - there are most likely more tv shows that I haven't heard of than I have.
The same goes for actors and actresses and musicians too. I guess I'm out of the loop.

cube said...

I've been a TV nut since I was a child. I had a 19" Sylvania in my room and I got hooked. Music, not so much, because I'm more visually oriented than aurally.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I guess I'm bothh aurally and visually oriented. One thing I don't like is background noise.
If I'm not specifically watching or listening to something I don't want it on.

Heading out to help my younger daughter with her kids. I'll be back tomorrow evening. Have a good two days.

cube said...

I'm more visually oriented, than aurally, but if I see AND hear something, it's pretty much cemented in my head. I guess that's how I got such good grades in school.

Sometimes if I see something enough, I will remember it. For example, on my first day of work at an Internist's office, I sat around and didn't have much to do except sit around an wait for the phone to ring. A medicial journal came in the mail. The cover read, "Catheter Induced Ablation Of The Atriventricular Junction To Control Spraventricular Arrythmia." I've never been able to forget that in 31 years.

Have fun with your family.

cube said...

That should've read supraventricular... after all this time I still can't type.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Thanks. I had a good time but it's good to be home.

I wouldn't have known the difference.

It has definitely cooled off here.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Can you believe that fall is here already. Soon it will be Christmas.

cube said...

Tempus fugit. The start of fall doesn't change things around here because temps are still hot, but I'm happy for the football.

sue hanes said...

Cube - Living in Florida would be great because of the warm weather all of the time, but I'm so used to the four seasons that I think I would miss them.

However - the older I get I don't like the snow and ice. I don't like to drive in it.

sue hanes said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
cube said...

I've lived in the snow and took it well enough, but I always prefer the warmth.

BTW we do have seasons down here... hot and not so hot.

sue hanes said...

Cube - I can understand that you prefer the warmth. I wouldn't complain about it. Although I don't do to well in very hot weather. It's just not in my genes.

Ha ha. about the seasons in Florida. I have only pleasant memories of visiting your state.

cube said...

You're like my in-laws. They live in Cape Cod and only take the Florida heat in small increments. What can I say, some of us like it hot.

sue hanes said...

Cube - When you're hot you're hot.

I'd say that's just about right.
I don't think I could stand the heat year round. But if I had to I guess I could..

Now off to the opera. The Marriage of Figaro. It's supposed to be a good one but it's too long. Four acts and two intermissions.

Have a good evening.
